I came to Bark Busters as a customer. My Boston Terrier, Phil, struggled with separation anxiety and leash reactivity, even after plenty of puppy training. I knew I would eventually need to leave him home alone, so I called Bark Busters. Learning to speak dog changed everything for Phil and for me.
At the time I worked from home as a mom and part-time landlord, with a background in self-employment, volunteering and ski instruction. When my own trainer retired, our paths crossed at just the right time, and I became a certified Behaviour Therapist and Trainer. Since then I have helped hundreds of dogs and their families across Burnaby, the Tri-Cities and the North Shore.
I have a soft spot for misunderstood breeds like Pit Bulls and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and for anxious and reactive dogs. One of my most memorable clients was a deaf, partially blind rescue who reacted to everything on leash. Once her owner learned to give her the guidance she needed, she stopped reacting to the world around her.

How much does dog training cost in Burnaby?
Bark Busters offers complete programs rather than per-session pricing. Your program includes the initial in-home assessment, follow-up sessions and our Life Of Dog Support Guarantee. Pricing depends on your dog and your goals. Call Julie at 604-475-1359 for a personalized quote.
Do you offer puppy training in Burnaby and the Tri-Cities?
Yes. Julie comes to your home to help with house training, crate training, nipping and biting, chewing and early manners, so your puppy learns the rules in the place they will live. Starting early prevents problem behaviours from taking root. See our puppy training page for more.
Do I need a dog licence in Burnaby or Coquitlam?
Yes. Burnaby requires an annual licence for every dog over four months old, and each licence expires on December 31. Coquitlam requires a licence for every dog over six months. The City of North Vancouver licenses all dogs, with licences expiring on December 31 each year. Port Coquitlam and Port Moody have their own bylaws, so check with your city.
My dog pulls on the leash. What are the local leash rules?
Burnaby requires dogs in public places to be on a leash no longer than 2 metres. In Coquitlam, dogs must be on leash everywhere except where signs say otherwise. In the District of North Vancouver, the limit is a leash of 2.5 metres. If your dog pulls or lunges, we start in your home and on your own street, then build up to busier routes until your dog walks calmly beside you.
Can you help my dog with separation anxiety?
Yes. Separation anxiety is how Julie found Bark Busters in the first place, with her own Boston Terrier, Phil. We find out what triggers your dog’s panic when you leave and teach you how to build calm, confident alone time, step by step.

Aggression is one of our specialties. Every Bark Busters trainer learns our Stand Rite No Bite system and must pass a test on approaching aggressive situations safely. Do you train all breeds and ages?
Yes! We have trained puppies, senior dogs and every breed in between. Our communication-based method addresses behaviour rather than breed, so no dog is too old or too stubborn to learn.

Your support does not end when the sessions do. You can call us at any time, even months or years later, for advice or follow-up sessions. There is no time limit. We are here for the life of your dog.
How long are training sessions?
The initial session is typically 2 to 2.5 hours. This gives us time to assess your dog, teach you effective techniques and start seeing results immediately. Follow-up sessions are typically an hour.
