Meet Your Burnaby & Tri-Cities Dog Trainer: Julie Emery

Julie Emery Boston terriers

Julie Emery, your Bark Busters trainer in Burnaby and the TriCities, started her journey on the other side of the leash. As a dog owner searching for help with her own spirited Boston Terriers, she discovered a training method that changed everything. That discovery eventually became a brand new career.

We asked Julie what inspired the leap, which breeds hold a special place in her heart, and what she wishes every dog owner understood.

What Brought You to Dog Training?

“I got into dog training as a customer. At the time, I was a work-from-home mom working part-time as a landlord. As my children grew older and more independent, I had to decide whether to return to my career as a public servant or start a new business.

After researching several business ideas, including coffee shops and gift shops, I realized that becoming a full-time entrepreneur was the right path for me. Around that time, my dog Phil was struggling with separation anxiety and leash reactivity. Knowing I would eventually need to leave him home alone, I hired Rob from Bark Busters for help.

Learning to ‘speak dog’ made a genuine difference with my spirited Boston Terriers, and the results truly amazed me. Rob happened to be retiring, and our paths crossed at just the right time.

What Is Your Favourite Breed?

“As a former self-proclaimed crazy dog person, I love all breeds. Over the years, I have developed a deep appreciation for every dog’s unique appearance, personality, and abilities.

I have two Boston Terriers, so they are naturally my favourite breed at the moment. They make me smile when I am having a tough day and laugh when I am overworked or overtired.

As a trainer, I have also grown to appreciate some of the most misunderstood breeds, especially Pit Bulls and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. They are often wonderful dogs to work with. I also have a soft spot for Havanese dogs because of their incredible intelligence and eagerness to please.”

What Is a Favourite Moment You Have Had as a Trainer?

“I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of dogs across the Greater Vancouver area, but what stands out most are the incredible people I have met who are truly dedicated to their dogs.

One of my most memorable experiences involved a rescue dog who was deaf, partially blind, had mild separation anxiety, and was reactive on leash. Since she was my first deaf dog, I wondered whether I could truly communicate with her. In the end, I approached her the same way I would any other dog, and I think she appreciated me treating her like a normal dog.

The real magic happened when her owner understood what their dog needed and consistently communicated it. Once she realized she no longer needed to react to the world around her, everything changed.

Today, I still follow Baby Gorgeous on Instagram, where she is living her best life in glamorous onesies and visiting coffee shops.”

What Do You Wish You Could Tell Every Dog Owner?

“Your dog is not a baby. From your dog’s perspective, humans and dogs are different species, but your dog still looks to you the way dogs naturally look to leaders.

When a dog misbehaves, it is often because they do not fully understand their role in the relationship. They are not trying to be difficult. They are looking for guidance.

I used to love the saying, ‘Be the person your dog thinks you are,’ but now I prefer, ‘Be the person your dog needs you to be.’

Your dog loves you and wants to please you. More than anything, they need to feel safe and secure, and it is your responsibility to provide that leadership. With time and patience, your dog can become a much better and much happier dog.”
