Meet Your Laval & Terrebonne Dog Trainer: Alexandre Messier

Alexandre Messier - Dog Trainer Bark Busters Laval Terrebonne
Some people find their calling early. Alexandre Messier found his at 26, after a decade in television, when a Golden Retriever named Vito set him on a completely different path.

Alexandre is your Bark Busters trainer in Laval, Terrebonne and the North Shore. We asked him how he went from the media industry to canine behaviour, which breed holds a special place in his heart, and what he wishes every dog owner knew.

What Led You to Dog Training?

“I worked in the media industry for over 10 years. I enjoyed certain aspects of my job, but at just 26, I realized I could not see myself doing that for the rest of my life. I wanted a career I felt truly passionate about, one that would let me make a real difference in people’s lives.

At the time, I had my Golden Retriever, Vito. I wanted to give him the best possible training, so I started learning everything I could about canine behaviour. The more I learned, the more I realized this was exactly what I wanted to do.

I eventually decided to make a complete career change and become a dog trainer. Today, having helped over 2,000 families and their dogs, I can say it is the best decision I have ever made. I have never looked back.”

What Are Your Favourite Dog Breeds?

“Honestly, every breed has its own personality, strengths and little challenges. That is exactly what makes my job so interesting.

That said, if you look at my business card, my posters or even the lettering on my car, you will quickly figure out that I have a soft spot for Golden Retrievers. Their temperament, their eagerness to please and their versatility mean they will always have a special place in my heart.

Whatever the breed, my goal stays the same: help every dog become the best possible companion for its family.”

What Is Your Fondest Memory as a Trainer?

“I have so many, but one really stands out.

I was lucky enough to help a dog of nearly 14 years who had very severe separation anxiety. His owners could hardly ever leave him alone without him barking, panicking or becoming extremely stressed.

After we worked together, he finally managed to stay home on his own, calmly.

That was not just a victory for the dog. It was a victory for the whole family. Seeing their relief reminded me that it is never too late to help a dog. No matter their age or the severity of the problem, there is almost always hope when you apply the right method consistently.”

What Advice Would You Give Every Dog Owner?

“My biggest piece of advice: do not wait until problems become serious before you ask for help.

Many behaviours that seem normal at first, like pulling on the leash, jumping up at guests, barking constantly or guarding certain resources, become much harder to change over time.

Above all, remember that your dog does not need a perfect owner. He needs a calm, consistent and steady leader. The few minutes you invest in his training each day will have a lifelong impact.

It is often the small changes in our own habits that make the biggest difference to our dogs.”
