At Bark Busters, every trainer has a story – a moment that shifted their path toward helping dogs and their families. For Kyli Horton, your Bark Busters trainer in Newmarket and York Region, that moment came while working at Animal Services in Alberta, watching fixable behaviours cost dogs their lives. That experience sparked a mission she’s been living ever since.
We asked Kyli about her history, what she loves about working with dogs, and the one thing she wishes every dog owner knew.
What Brought You to Dog Training?
“Over the years I have worked in several different areas of the animal industry, one of which was at Animal Services in Alberta. I saw how many dogs weren’t getting a chance because of behaviours that were fixable. It was heartbreaking.
I came across Bark Busters when my sister-in-law purchased a Bark Busters territory almost 10 years ago. I saw how amazing the Bark Busters system was and how quickly it helped so many dogs and owners and when the opportunity came, I knew that this was what I was meant to do!”
What Are Your Favourite Breeds?
“I love all dogs! But I have to say Bulldogs are my kryptonite, specifically American Bulldogs and English Bulldogs.”
What Is a Favourite Moment You’ve Had as a Trainer?
“The best part about my job is being able to help owners that are at the end of their rope see the light at the end of the tunnel. In the first lesson, not only do owners see big changes in their dog’s behaviour, but they also learn where the behaviour came from in the first place.”
What Do You Wish You Could Tell Every Dog Owner?
“If you treat your dog like a human, they will treat you like a dog. It’s one of the most important things I’ve learned in this industry. Dogs need clear communication, consistent boundaries, and confident leadership, not human expectations. When owners start understanding their dog as a dog, everything changes.”
