Some trainers learn about behaviour from a book. Juliet Prey learned it on a farm, in an ICU, and in a few thousand living rooms.
Juliet is your Bark Busters trainer in Scarborough and Durham Region, and the Co-Owner of Bark Busters Canada. We asked her what pulled her into dog training, the breeds she keeps coming home with, and the moments that still make the job worth it.
What Brought You to Dog Training in the First Place?
I have always loved dogs and have always been fascinated by how they learn and communicate. In-home dog training gave me the chance to work with both dogs and their humans, which is one of my favourite parts of the job.
I love helping people understand their dogs a little better, and seeing how much of a difference patience, consistency and good communication can make.
What Is Your Favourite Breed?
That is a tough one! I definitely have a soft spot for Golden Retrievers, but somehow, whenever it is my turn to get a dog, I always end up with a mutt of some sort.
I really do love that every dog is different, though. Every breed and mix has their own personality, and I enjoy getting to know what makes each dog tick.
What Is a Favourite Moment You Have Had When Training?
Honestly, it is those little “aha!” moments. When a dog suddenly figures something out, gains a bit of confidence, or makes a choice they were not able to make before, those moments never get old.
I especially love seeing a dog and their owner start to understand each other better. When you can see that relationship changing and becoming stronger, that is pretty special.
What Do You Wish You Could Tell Every Dog Owner?
Be patient with your dog, and with yourself. Your dog is always learning, and they are not going to get everything right all the time.
Training is not about having a perfect dog. It is about learning how to communicate with each other and building a relationship based on trust.
Celebrate the little wins, give your dog some grace when they are struggling, and try to see things from their point of view. It can make such a big difference.
