It is a fair question, and it is surprisingly hard to answer from a website, because the training industry prices itself in four completely different ways. One trainer quotes per hour. Another quotes per six week course. A third quotes a flat fee for the life of the dog. Comparing those numbers side by side is like comparing a taxi fare to a bus pass.
This guide breaks down how dog training is priced in Canada, what sits inside each price, and how to work out which option actually costs you less over your dog’s lifetime.
The four pricing models you will run into
Group classes. A set course, usually six to eight weekly sessions in a hall or a store, with anywhere from six to twelve dogs in the room. This is the cheapest entry point. Good for basic obedience cues and exposure, weak on any serious behavioural issues or anything that only happens at home.
Private sessions by the hour. A trainer comes to you or you go to them, and you pay per visit. Flexible, and the cost keeps running for as long as you need help.
Board and train. Your dog goes away for two to four weeks and comes back trained. The highest price tag by a distance, and the model with the biggest catch: the dog learns to respond to the trainer, in the trainer’s environment, and you were not there for any of it.

Prices vary by city and by trainer, so treat these as the general shape of the market rather than an exact quote. Group courses usually land in the low hundreds for the full course. Private sessions are commonly quoted per visit, and most owners need several. Board and train programs run into the thousands.

What you should actually be comparing
Ask every trainer you speak to the same five questions, and the price differences start to make sense.
- Is this per session or total? An hourly rate that looks low becomes expensive at visit seven.
- What happens when the problem comes back? Behaviour can become difficult at adolescence, after a house move, or after a new baby. Find out what the follow-up costs are, and what support beyond the initial training looks like.
- Where does the training happen? If the barking, the door charging and the counter surfing happen in your home, training in a classroom means someone still has to translate the theory back to real life. That someone is you.
- Who gets trained, the dog or the family? Programs that leave the owners out tend to need repeating.
- Is there a guarantee, and what does it actually promise? Read the wording. Plenty of guarantees cover the course, not the dog.
Why the cheapest option often costs the most
A six week group course is a genuinely good value introduction for a confident puppy who needs socialising and basic cues like “sit”. It is the wrong tool for separation anxiety, leash reactivity, resource guarding or aggression, and owners often spend that money first, see no change in the problem that made them call, and then pay again for the help they needed in the first place.
The real cost of training is rarely the invoice. It is the replaced furniture, the fence repairs, the walks nobody enjoys, the visitors who stop coming, and in the worst cases – the lawsuit or the rehoming conversation. Getting the right help early is always worth the investment.

Consistency at home moves that timeline. Your trainer is your coach and motivator.
When to call a professional
Take it from those who know best: call as soon as a behaviour worries you rather than after a year of managing around it. Aggression, biting, growling, separation anxiety, reactivity on the lead and any behaviour that has made you change your routine all need professional eyes, and they need them in the place where the behaviour happens.
