At Bark Busters, every trainer has a story — a moment that shifted their path toward helping dogs and their families. For Kush Khurana, your Bark Busters trainer in Montreal East and the South Shore, that moment came through his own dog, Teddy, and a career change that turned a passion into a purpose.
We asked Kush what drives him, what he loves about working with dogs, and the one thing he wishes every dog owner knew.
What Brought You to Dog Training?
“I have always been driven by the process of problem-solving and efficiency in my previous job as a Commercial Banker, but it was my experience with my own dog, Teddy, that truly shifted my focus toward canine behaviour.
I wanted a training methodology that was logical, structured, and highly effective — without relying on treats or physical force. When I discovered the Bark Busters system, its emphasis on natural communication and immediate results aligned perfectly with how I believe training should work.
Transitioning into running the Montreal East and South Shore territories allowed me to combine my entrepreneurial background with a practical, hands-on service that directly improves the daily lives of dogs and their owners.”
What Is Your Favourite Breed?
“While I work with and appreciate every breed, I have a particular affection for Goldendoodles — like my own dog. There is a common misconception that all doodles behave the same way, but their blend of intelligence, energy, and sensitivity requires a clear and consistent communication style.
Working with them allows me to leverage their high intelligence to establish strong boundaries quickly, turning them into exceptionally balanced and adaptable companions. Goldendoodles are very eager to please!”
What Is a Favourite Moment You’ve Had as a Trainer?
“My favourite moments consistently involve the immediate shift in the dog’s behaviour in the first lesson. Clients often come to me feeling completely overwhelmed, exhausted, and stuck in a reactive cycle with their dogs.
Watching the exact moment an owner learns how to speak their dog’s language — and seeing the dog instantly calm down and look to them for leadership — is incredibly rewarding. Seeing that relief on an owner’s face and knowing that the household dynamic has permanently changed for the better within just a few hours is the most fulfilling part of this work.”
What Do You Wish You Could Tell Every Dog Owner?
“I wish every owner understood that dogs do not think, rationalize, or communicate like humans — and treating them as if they do creates unnecessary stress for both parties. Dogs thrive on consistency, clear boundaries, and calm leadership.
True behavioural change does not come from bribery or only managing symptoms; it comes from learning how to communicate in a way your dog actually understands. Once you fix the communication gap and establish yourself as a capable leader, the unwanted behaviours naturally fall away.”
