Tips for Travelling with Your Pet

If you plan to travel during the holidays, you may not have the option (or want to) leave your pet behind. If you plan to travel with your dog, you need to plan ahead for a smooth journey. Here are some tips for travelling with your pet during the holidays or any time of the year.

Update your contact information

If your dog has a microchip, make sure the contact information is up to date. The same goes for your dog’s tags--if you get separated while travelling, current contact info including your cell phone number could help reunite you with your pet faster.

Restrain your dog in moving vehicles

If you aren’t using a crate in your car to travel with your dog, buy a doggie seat belt adapter. These use your car’s seat belts to restrain your pet so there will be less chance of an injury in case of an accident. The last thing you want is your unrestrained pet flying through the air and hitting you if you have to slam on your brakes. Keep both of you safe and restrain your pet properly.

Check out airline and train guidelines carefully

You may be planning to travel by air or rail with your pet, but make sure you know exactly what that will entail. Will your dog be allowed to board the plane with your or will he need to go on as ‘cargo’? The same applies for train travel--rules may vary depending on the railway service you use.

Make sure you restrict your pet’s access to food for at least six hours prior to travelling by air or rail. An ‘accident’ in a crowded, close space is unpleasant for everyone and you don’t want your pet to become a nuisance to other travellers.

Plan hotel stays around your pet

There are many more pet-friendly hotels nowadays, but be sure to read the fine print. Some charge extra fees for larger breeds, others may require hefty deposits for your dog. Take your dog’s bed and a few toys, if possible. This will help comfort your pet in strange, new surroundings.
