The Benefits of Adopting a Shelter Dog
"Shopping" for a dog may sound strange, but many people buy their dogs from breeders every year. Sadly, this isn't always best for everyone--dogs waiting for homes in shelters are often overlooked by people who want a specific breed or a young puppy. Before you buy a dog from a breeder or pet store, consider the awesome benefits of adopting a shelter dog.
You'll have one very grateful dog
Some shelter dogs are literally at death's door. Sadly, thousands of dogs are euthanized every year because they aren't adopted from shelters. If you adopt a dog, you'll not only be saving a life, but you'll be getting a very grateful companion at the same time.
You'll likelier get a healthier dog
Many 'purebred' dogs are the product of inbreeding within the same family of dogs. It's not uncommon for siblings to be bred or a pup to be bred with a parent in order to continue keeping the animals genetically 'pure'. Using the same group of dogs for repeated breeding often results in genetic disorders that make for sickly dogs. On the other hand, mixed breed dogs have a greater genetic variation and tend to have fewer problems seen in the purebred breeds.
Adopting is cheaper than shopping
Just look at the price tag of many purebred dogs--some can cost thousands of dollars. And if you want to be a responsible pet owner, you'll still have to pay to have your purebred dog spayed or neutered. But if you adopt, most shelters provide low cost spay and neuter services. Some even spay or neuter the dogs before they adopt them out. So all the money you save on your new pet can be used to pay for toys, training, or even a treat for the pair of you to share.
You can skip potty training
Puppies are great, but training a puppy is, well, not so great. Many older dogs in shelters are already past that awkward puppy phase, so you won't have to worry about chewed furniture or potty training. That's a win for you and the dog you adopt!
