Take it Outside

Summer is the perfect time for taking your dog outdoors for a little fun and games, but it’s also the perfect time to work on training your pup. There are lots of training “games” you can play with your pet to make the hard work seem like fun.

Summer is the perfect time for taking your dog outdoors for a little fun and games, but it’s also the perfect time to work on training your pup. There are lots of training “games” you can play with your pet to make the hard work seem like fun. Here are a few things you can try with your dog in the great outdoors.

The Basics

Even in a small outdoor space you can practice basic obedience. Come, Sit, Stay, retrieve, etc. are all achievable on a nice, soft patch of grass. Praise you dog heartily for every success.

Obstacle Course

If you have more space, and a dog who knows most basic commands, kick your training up a notch and set up a doggie obstacle course. Small objects can be used for jumps, larger objects for going around or under. Tubes are great for agility, and they can be found in most pet stores. You could even improvise with a barrel that has had the top and bottom removed.

Swimming

Swimming is a great way to practice your dog’s recall skills. Toss a ball or other floating object out into a pond or pool and have your dog fetch and bring it back to you. Take care not to overtire your pup between throws, and be sure to look out for any hazards or other swimmers.

Doggy Popsicles

This easy treat is the perfect reward for a hot day of training. Simply freeze a handful of your pet’s favourite treats in a bowl or plastic container. Pop the entire block of ice out into your pooch’s bowl and let him spend hours licking and chewing the treat. It will cool him down and keep him occupied for ages.
