How to Stop Your Dog Jumping on You

When your dog jumps up at you, it may seem cute or even funny. After all, an excited dog can be quite adorable. However, this type of behaviour can be off-putting and even dangerous for small children. You really need to discourage your dog from jumping up at you and others.

Here's how to stop your dog jumping on you:

Why they do it

Dogs greet each other face-to-face, so to them, it’s only natural to want to get on your eye level. Of course, while they’re there, they usually want to give you a kiss and a sniff, too. It’s not bad behaviour, if you’re a dog, but it’s certainly not acceptable behaviour for humans, so it’s best to curb the act before it becomes a habit.

How to correct it

When you see your dog, Remain tall, still and calm. Don’t give any attention other than a vocal correction if he starts to jump. This may take some time for him to learn--be consistent and don’t use physical aggression to correct your dog’s behaviour.

Praise your dog for keeping his paws firmly on the floor. Practice coming into the house and see how your dog responds. Avoid too much positive physical praise as it could overly stimulate your dog and get him too excited.

Unfortunately, humans tend to be inconsistent. If you laugh and pet your dog once when he jumps up, he’ll expect you to do it the next time. If you set the rules, he’ll happily follow them because you’re the pack leader.
