Fire Safety for Your Dog

Here are some fire safety tips to help keep your dog safe in a fire emergency.

A fire in your home can be devastating, especially if your pet is injured because of it. While it’s a good idea for your family to have a fire safety plan in place, it’s also important to think about what you’ll do with your pets should a fire occur. Here are some fire safety tips to help keep your dog safe in a fire emergency.

Take precautions

First and foremost, prevention is better than reacting to a fire. Never leave your dog unattended with candles or any other type of fire. Even a lit stove can be a fire hazard, so don’t leave your pet alone with one. Also, make sure your pet doesn’t chew on electrical cords. Damaged cords could cause a fire, so check yours often.

Make a plan

Your entire family should have a plan in case of a fire. Practice that plan regularly and include your dog in the practice. During an actual fire, your pet may become disoriented and scared, but practicing your escape route may help him remember what to do during the emergency. Make a note of where your pet likes to sleep so you can put that in the plan (to check for your pet, if possible). Also, place stickers on your home’s windows that tell firefighters that you have a dog inside.

Emergency info

Make sure your pet has an ID tag or microchip with your current contact information on it. If your pet manages to get away from you during the emergency, your contact information could help reunite you more quickly. It’s also a good idea to keep a current photo of your pet, plus his medical records, somewhere safe, like your car or even online in the cloud. That way, you’ll have quick access if you need it immediately after the fire.

If you can’t find your pet

Don’t risk your life looking for your pet in a burning house. If your dog doesn’t come to you immediately, leave an exterior door open and call for your dog safely from outside.
