Think you have what it takes to be a great dog owner?
It is your responsibility to ensure that your dog can adjust well and live safely in a human society. Before adopting a dog, ask yourself these questions:
What type of dog should I get?
Will you adopt a shelter dog or seek out a breeder? Temperament is more important than breed when bringing an animal into your life.
Puppy or adult? You will have to invest a lot more time if bringing a puppy home.
Do you have the space and time for an active breed? Some dogs can live happily in apartments with a daily walk, and some will require more space to romp in a large yard.
Are you committed to grooming? Some dog breeds are maintenance-free and some will need extensive brushing to get rid of undercoat or matted fur.
Does this dog need to get along with kids or other animals? Knowing the temperament of your new dog is important and you’ll need to devote extra time to educate your pet and family.
Bylaws and laws
Does the place you live allow pets? Are you committed to educating your dog so he’s not a nuisance to your neighbours or community? Does your town require dogs to be registered? A yearly licence fee will be part of your expenses.
Health care for your dog
Veterinary care can be expensive, but it’s important that you keep your pooch up to date with all vaccinations and keep him safe from things like heartworm and parvo. Responsible dog owners spay or neuter their dogs. It can be an expensive procedure. Will you be able to afford to keep your dog healthy? If not, it might not be the best time to own a dog.
Identification for your dog
At a minimum, you dog will require a collar with identification tags. It’s added protection to have him microchipped, because tags can become detached or damaged.
Time
Do you work long hours or travel a lot? If so, who will be there to care for your dog while you’re away? Owning a dog is a big responsibility that takes a lot of time and discipline. If you can’t provide that, you might want to consider a different type of pet.
